Zachary A. Fryer

Zachary Fryer was a National Merit Scholar at Michigan State University and a member of its Honors College. He graduated from MSU in 1998 with high honors, receiving a B.S. in Geography. He then attended the Northwestern University School of Law, graduating in 2001.

Mr. Fryer began his legal career at a prominent business-oriented law firm in Detroit, Michigan. His practice at that firm consisted of representing captive insurance companies, health systems, hospitals, physician groups and other users of alternative risk financing in legal matters pertaining to their insurance and self-insurance arrangements. His experience includes advising on the formation of captive insurance companies, conversion of existing Cayman Islands captive insurers to segregated portfolio companies, loss portfolio transfers between captive insurers, review and modification of self-insurance trusts, mergers of self-insurance trusts, analyzing questions of insurance coverage, and preparing insurance policies and reinsurance agreements. He has worked with captive insurers to establish, modify, and terminate reinsurance relationships with fronting insurers; draft, review, and modify shareholder agreements for captive insurance companies and risk retention groups; and advising on the federal and state tax treatment of captive insurance and self-insurance arrangements. He has also worked on non-insurance healthcare matters, including analysis of issues relating to s. 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, joint ventures between for-profit and nonprofit organizations, and a variety of general corporate and contracting matters.

Mr. Fryer was a contributing author of Alternative Risk Financing Options for Healthcare Organizations, published by the American Health Lawyers Association in 2005. He also jointly presented, with Larry Smith of MedStar Health, the topic "Evaluating Risk Financing AlternativesRRG vs. Captive vs. Self-Insurance Trusts vs. Large Self-Insured Retention (SIR) Limits," at the IBC Captive Forum in September 2005; co-presented “Captives 101” with Al Glenn at the conference of the Leading Edge Alliance in October 2006; and co-presented “Physician Owned Captives,” a web seminar sponsored by Strategic Risk Services (Cayman) Ltd., with Wayne Cowan, Mike D'Eramo and Tammy Backenstoe, in November 2006.

Mr. Fryer became a founding member of Krolikowski & Fryer, PLLC in July 2008, after practicing nearly seven years with, and achieving the title of partner at, his prior firm.
